Back-to-school is one of the biggest retail moments of the year, but it’s no longer just an opportunity for supermarkets, stationery brands and clothing retailers. From technology brands and restaurants to children’s activity clubs, businesses across almost every sector can benefit from the seasonal increase in spending.
The 2026 shopping season is also looking very different to previous years. Parents are shopping earlier, spreading purchases over several months and prioritising convenience just as much as price. Technology has become an essential school purchase, while AI is changing how families research products before buying.
Understanding these changing behaviours can help you plan marketing campaigns that reach customers at the right time. Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is particularly effective during this period, keeping your business visible while parents and guardians travel to work, shop on the high street and are preparing for the return to school.
Back-to-school shopping is starting earlier
Previously, August was considered the peak of the back-to-school shopping season, but this is shifting. Research from Omnisend shows many households are now beginning their shopping in July rather than waiting until the weeks before school starts. Zeta Global also reports that the back-to-school season has expanded, with retailers running campaigns across several months instead of concentrating activity in August.
One of the biggest reasons is household budgeting. With 32% of UK consumers worried that prices could continue to rise, many families are spreading purchases across multiple paydays to make back-to-school costs more manageable (Omnisend, 2026).
This creates a much longer opportunity to reach customers. Rather than relying on a short campaign in late August, brands should consider maintaining visibility throughout July and August to capture both early-planners and last-minute shoppers.
Technology is now a back-to-school essential
The traditional shopping list has changed significantly over the past decade.
While uniforms, stationery and shoes remain essential purchases, technology has become one of the fastest-growing back-to-school categories. Many schools now expect students to have access to a laptop or tablet, making technology a necessary expense for many households.
According to Gekko (2025):
- 76% of schools expect students to have access to a laptop or tablet.
- 23% of parents need to purchase a device before September.
- Parents spend an average of £511.40 per child on technology.
This presents an opportunity for tech brands, insurance providers and second-hand stores to position their products as part of the back-to-school journey. Helping parents make decisions or offering deals on school friendly technology could help your brand stand out against competitors on the market.
Convenience matters just as much as price
Price remains important, but it’s no longer the only factor influencing where people shop. According to Zeta Global, only 16% of back-to-school shoppers choose based solely on price. Instead, shoppers increasingly value:
- Quality for the price
- Convenience
- Confidence they’ll find the right products
- Time savings
- Trusted retailers
Many families deliberately shop with retailers where they can buy everything in one place, reducing the number of shopping trips and making it easier to compare products (Omnisend, 2026) so highlighting expertise, product quality, delivery options or product bundles will help sales.
